Abstract

This paper discusses potentials, requirements and design of millimeter wave communication system which has been touted as viable solution to meeting escalating data rate demand and capacity constraint of lower frequency microwave communication. We focus specifically in this work on review of various approaches of Millimeter wave architecture design and why hybrid design seems to be the preferred choice. Attention is also focused on the review of a number of algorithms developed in the literature for obtaining Millimeter wave channel state information necessary for the design of hybrid precoder and combiner (millimeter wave architectures). It is found that Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) algorithm has received significant efforts in the literature with little or no attention on other compressed sensing methods. It is however observed that OMP exhibits poor behaviour at relatively low signal to noise ratio. Hence there is need to exploit other methods of channel estimation that will perform better than OMP at lower signal to noise regimes
