Abstract

Thin wire antennas are ubiquitous due to their easiness and cost of construction. This paper investigates the radiation parameters of a thin wire dipole antenna at commercial Television (TV) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) frequency bands. When use is made of the pulse basis functions in the method of moment (MoM) solution of a delta gap fed dipole antenna, formulated is a generalized expression for the approximate current distribution in the antenna. Using appropriate equations, condition for an antenna to be regarded as a thin wire is formulated. Results of several computations for the current distribution show that the choice of number of sub-divisions of the antenna length in MoM solution affects the current flowing in the antenna, which consequently determine the value of the radiation resistance and impedance. For the GSM bands, results obtained showed that more power is required during the uplink period than that required during the connection from the base station to the mobile phone known as the downlink period. Hence, the antenna must be designed to radiate more energy with little or no loss in signal
