Abstract
This paper provides a static analysis of a multi-story, multi-bay planar frame exposed to axial loads and moments using the finite element method. We developed the plane frame stiffness matrix and finite element equation using quadratic shape functions to determine the deformations and reaction moments at the point of application of the axial loads and at the base of the structure respectively. The study varied the number of storey and bays and the results showed that the deformations and base reaction moments increase with an increasing number of storey while they decrease as the number of bays increase. These results were obtained with the assumption that the plane frame is linearly elastic, joints are rigid and the plane frame elements have a constant stiffness matrix
