Abstract

This study aimed to analyze traffic congestion in urban road networks. Travel time and delay parameters was adopted to evaluate the existing road network conditions of congestion, travel rate, delay ratio and travel time indexes were introduced to respectively measure the congestion levels of urban road segment and network. 7.75km long stretch Asero junction to camp junction along Abeokuta-Ibadan road was used as case study for traffic congestion analysis based on weekly data collected. The calculation results were analyzed and compared mutually based on direction of travel, period of the days and segment sub-division of case study route. The three measures indicate similar trend results of traffic congestion states, and identify road section B on Eastward direction of travel, as the highest traffic congested area along the study route with peak travel rate and delay ratio of 15.41 and 0.84 respectively, while road section C is identify as the highest traffic congested area along the study route with peak travel rate and delay ratio of 9.94 and 0.76 respectively. The highest travel time index (TTI) value are 3.90 and 4.12 for Eastward and westward directions of travel respectively imply that 290% and 312% additional travel time is needed compared to free flow travel time. Mitigation approaches were recommended and provides a constructive insight into the development of a sustainable and resilient traffic management system
