Abstract
Lack of awareness of the quantity of energy used leads to wastage f energy. Hence, the need to properly manage the energy usage arises. This work develops a smart energy meter that informs the user of the actual energy consumption and manages it by cutting off some loads. The current is sensed by a current transformer and fed into an Arduino ATMega 832P microcontroller through a regulator circuit. The microcontroller establishes a bi-directional communication with a developed web-server using MQTT internet protocol. The response from the web server initiates the cut off of the relay which is connected to some selected loads. The results obtained from experimental tests with various loads connected to the device showed a 33.5% average error in the readings compared to the input ratings from the manufacturers. The smart meter is applicable in domestic and industrial loads connected to relays.
