Abstract
Hydropower can be described as energy from water sources including the ocean, rivers and waterfalls. This paper focuses on the development of a test rig using a 10,000lt-capacity overhead tank which served as an artificial water source. A detail component design and development of a 10kW Micro Hydro Turbine was thereafter done and its performance evaluation carried out using the developed test rig. The turbine basically works by converting the hydraulic energy into mechanical power through redirection of the fluid flow. The turbine runner shaft transfers the mechanical work to a generator for electrical generation. The key design parameters used are head of 5.5m, volumetric flow rate of 0.2143m3/s and specific speed of 584. These design parameters favoured a Propeller turbine type which was consequently developed. In order to predict the velocity and pressure distribution along the blade, hub and shroud surfaces, appropriate geometric design and analysis were done which gives Runner Vane Angle at Inlet, 𝛽1 as 146.5o and Runner Vane Angle at exit β2 as 200. The performance evaluation gave the discharge rate as 97liters/s by using inter-spacing divisions of 200mm and resulted in a runner speed of 650rpm. The turbine was thereafter installed at an existing dam by adapting it to the existing parameters/configuration to generate electricity
