Abstract

Changes in plasma bilirubin and protein concentrations of paracetamol-overdosed albino rabbits were studied using standard methods. Twenty-one albino rabbits were allotted into seven groups (A-G) of three animals each. Groups A, B, and C were administered distilled water (20ml/kg body weight), coconut water (20ml/kg body weight), and paracetamol (1000mg/kg body weight) orally for 7 days respectively. Groups D and E were administered coconut water and silymarin (35mg/kg body weight) for 6 days and paracetamol on the 7th day, while Groups F and G were given distilled water for 6 days, paracetamol on the 7th day and coconut water and silymarin after 3 hours respectively. Results show that paracetamol administration significantly (P<0.05) reduced the animal's body weight and plasma total protein concentration but increased (P<0.05) the bilirubin concentrations. Post-treatment with coconut water and silymarin had a better ameliorative effect than pre-treatment on the changes in the total protein and bilirubin concentrations of the animals overdosed with paracetamol. The results indicate that the effect of paracetamol overdose can be effectively ameliorated with coconut water administration
