The medical benefits of the phytochemical extract of mistletoe leaves from four plant species at Akpobome Mosogar, Delta State, Nigeria

Abstract

In this study, a thorough investigation was undertaken to examine the medical benefits of the phytochemical extract derived from the leaves of mistletoe (Viscum album) thriving on four different trees: the avocado pear scientifically named “Persea americana," the oil bean indigenous to Africa known as “Pentaclethra macrophylla," the sweet orange, scientifically named Citrus sinensis and guava known as “Psidium guajava”. Fresh mistletoe leaves were collected from the four different trees, thoroughly washed in water, and dried for 18 days in the dry season (January) at room temperature (28o C). The dried leaves were then milled and packaged. Standard techniques were used to analyse the samples for vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. Anthocyanin content was highest in both avocado pear (Persea americana) and African oil bean (P. macrophylla) (0.45 ± 0.006a) mg/g apiece and lowest in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), 0.32±0.003b mg/g. For tannin content, Persea americana had the highest value (3.34±0.003a mg/g), while African variety of oil beans, known as “Pentaclethra macrophylla" had 2.19±1.04c mg/g. The value for chlorophyll A was highest in African oil bean: Pentaclethra macrophylla. (0.41±0.19c), Chlorophyll B, on the other hand, was highest in in avocado pear (Persea americana) (0.59±0.002a). Vitamin B1 and B2 were highest in avocado pear (Persea americana) (1.02±0.002a) and 1.04±0.029a respectively. For vitamin C, it was 1.0±0.002a for guava and for folate, it was avocado pear (Persea americana) (1.34±0.004c) and for sodium, it was guava (Psidium guajava) (0.05±0.003a). There was no established pattern in the spread of parameters investigated in the different mistletoe leaves. Based on the values obtained, all the samples/species have nutritional/medicinal properties with defined host specificity. This study found that the leaves of mistletoe were a valuable supply source for vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals.
