Abstract

Salt consumption has been shown to alter hemodynamic balance which plays an important role in arterial blood pressure regulation. We hypothesize that short-term salt loading would affect blood pressure, urinary volume and urinary electrolyte levels after exercise and postural adjustment in young Nigerians. Eight (8) young healthy males were recruited for 5 days. Anthropometric data were taken while blood pressure and heart rate readings were recorded at rest and after postural changes and exercise on the first day before salt load, and on the last day after salt load respectively. Blood and urinary samples were collected on the first day and last day before and after salt loading. A moderate salt load level caused a minimal increase in Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP), Mean Arterial Blood Pressure (MABP), Heart Rate (HR), serum and urine electrolytes, and urine volume compared to baseline. Postural adjustment elicited progressive decreases in SBP, DBP, MABP, but caused a significant increase in HR after salt loading. Exercise led to significantly increased SBP and MABP following salt load. While DBP was unchanged, HR was increased after exercise compared with pre-salt load and exercise readings. These findings demonstrate that short-term salt ingestion can modulate hemodynamic parameters in young healthy adults. Postural adjustment from supine to standing elicits decreased blood pressure, unlike exercise, however, both activities could increase heart rate
